Here's to the Future - Poem

Why did I always make some excuse?
Why did I put up with years of abuse?
The answer is not easy; it took lots of time,
To realise I'm special and violence is a crime.

All through the ages the men had the power,
And physical strength that would make women cower,
Times have now changed; women put up a fight,
To live free of fear is everyone's right.

Our children are precious but with one childhood,
Let us ensure that it is carefree and good,
That their memories are happy, not tainted with fears,
Of seeing their mothers bruised and in tears.

History tells us of men's pillage and rape,
But we're in the present and it's time to escape,
Now women all over are making a stand,
And everyone here will give them a hand.
