Trembling fingers turn the key,
It's now or never him or me,
I just can't take it anymore,
I silently unlock the door,
My shallow breath, loud to my ears,
Please don't let him wake, I fear,
As he lay there deep in sleep,
The memories haunt me dark and deep,
Of kicks and punches raining down,
Him face creased in an evil frown,
My body later, bruised and aching,
From the beating I've been taking,
Abusive words cut to the core,
As I lie, shaking on the floor,
"Rotten mother, rotten wife"
You're ugly, look at the way you dress"
"No other man would look at you now"
You're stuck with me, you stupid cow"
Words designed to keep me down,
And let me know who wears the crown,
For he is king and I am slave,
So be a good girl, now behave,
I work my fingers to the bone,
Care for the children, clean the home,
keep receipts for all I buy,
So he can't say I'm telling lies,
About where I go and what I spend,
Daren't even stop to speak to friends,
For accusations will abound,
"where've you been? Sleeping around?"

rush to the shop, get the kids from school,
The clock is ticking, he's no fool,
He knows how long the journey takes,
He won't allow for any mistakes,
One minute late and I'm in trouble,
Better get back, at the double,
If God forbid, I looked attractive,
His jealous thoughts would soon be active,
So I cover up as best I can,
Can't afford looks from another man,
He'd accuse me without thought or pause,
And hit me without any cause,
So I carry on my dreary life,
Just another down-trodden wife,
Then out of the blue something deep inside,
Rushes through me like a tide,
Forgotten feelings scream and shout,
"We've had enough, now let us out",
Dignity, Pride and Self-Respect,
demand to know why they've been left,
unused inside me for so long,
but now they're burning bright and strong,
for I'm a queen in my own right.
Off I walk through the door,
Now I know what life is for,
I feel free, the world is mine,
The sun is shining all the time,
So many things I'd like to do,
I will, I can, this is true,
But most of all, one thing is left,
Being alive is the best.
