'Assessing the Risk to Children and Young People'
JOANNA SHARPEN returns to this year’s summer conference by popular demand. During 2008 Joanna developed a ‘Children’s Toolkit’, in conjunction and funded by the Department of Health, which was launched nationally in November 2008. The toolkit is packed with useful advice and practical steps to assist children and young people who encounter domestic violence at home or during their education. As an important member of the Greater London Domestic Violence Project, Joanna is a firm believer that children and young people need support in establishing healthy relationships. Copies of the Toolkit will be available at the July Conference.
JENNIFER MC DERMOTT represents the Cassandra Learning Centre (CLC) an award winning organisation which raises awareness and educates 13 to 25 year olds about domestic violence and young adult relationships. The Centre aims to raise awareness about the services available from local agencies and provides a forum where young people feel safe to talk about the violence and aggression in their relationships. Working under the theme of ‘Who do I tell?’, the Centre offers options, advice and support to those who are in a violence relationship and has been recognised for outstanding and innovative work in domestic violence. That success has prompted Jennifer to develop a similar centre in Jamaica.

'Assessing the Workplace Risk'
Two mothers whose daughters were murdered by violent ex-partners have launched a trust to campaign for greater public awareness of domestic violence in the workplace and the dangers of stalking.
TRICIA BERNAL’S daughter, Clare, aged 22, and was shot dead in Harvey Nicholls store in central London by a former boyfriend (Michael Pech) who then killed himself. “ I believe that our daughters died for change. It is our duty to do all we can to prevent this happening to others and we are trying raise awareness for our campaign”
CAROL FANUQUI’S daughter, Rana, aged 35, was stabbed to death in a field while exercising her horse.
Both victims had been stalked by their ex partners and both had reported the circumstances to the Police. Tricia and Carol believe that risk assessment should form an integral part of protecting females and if carried out correctly neither of their daughters would have died.
Domestic violence and abuse does not stay at home, it follows people into their workplaces. Victims of workplace abuse and prevention specialists will guide delegates through a series of defining steps and examine workplace domestic violence policies and procedures aimed at preventing similar tragedies to those described by our special keynote guests, Tricia and Carol.
